UUID v4 is entirely randomly generated (122 random bits). UUID v7 (standardized in RFC 9562 in 2024) encodes a 48-bit Unix epoch timestamp at the start of the identifier followed by sub-millisecond sequence bits and random bits. This makes UUID v7 naturally time-sortable while preserving high entropy.
